Rearing a pet in Singapore (or just about anywhere in the world) is certainly no piece of cake. Aside from all the unglamorous poo-picking, having a pet can be a huge financial burden. The daily necessities like food and treats are alright, but when your fur friend falls sick, veterinary costs can go through the roof! And let's not forget about the other essentials like dental treatment (click here to see a recent review!) and grooming.. Which is why I am glad to do a review on the mobile pet grooming service offered by 121 Pet Stylist!
THE BACKGROUND
Mocha is a toy poodle, which means he has these curly, bouncy ringlets that don't shed ever, so on a day to day basis simple brushing of his fur does the job. But his fur grows rather fast, so we take him for grooming about every 6 weeks. We used to take him to Pet Stop at Elias Mall until in recent months, I noticed that he would start crying and digging his nails into the back of my neck whenever we sent him there for his grooming. Mocha experiences very slight separation anxiety, but his dread is deadly when it comes to this particular groomer. Does the groomer hit him when he whines? Is she rough with him? Or maybe Mocha just doesn't like the groomer there. Call me a worrywart, but I'm not taking any chances.Along with my increasingly packed work schedule these days, I found myself putting off finding Mocha another groomer and basically leaving his fur to grow out until he looked like the respawn of Chewbacca, so I finally decided that calling the pet groomer to my house was the most viable option. A few years ago, I had done the same when I was too busy studying for my Os to leave the house, and now while I'm preparing for university (how time flies!), I could really do with some convenience.
THE BOOKING
Your person-to-go is Stella, the owner of 121 Pet Stylist, and whose mobile number can be found at the end of this post. She is friendly, sincere, and quick to reply on Whatsapp - three traits that I find the most important in pitching sales. For first-timers, she will assign you, from her team of dedicated pet stylists, any groomer who is available at the date and time you request their service. If your experience (or more importantly, your pet's) with the groomer is pleasant, you may request to book the same groomer for your subsequent sessions, at no additional fee! Of course, then you would have to accommodate to their schedules, but in my experience, it is always worth a little wait as I would prefer my dog to be groomed by a familiar person rather than a stranger at every visit. This time, I opted for a full grooming.THE GROOMING
My stylist, Aubrey, arrived punctually and was soon setting up the mini-table for Mocha's grooming session in the living room. You can have the grooming anywhere, indoors or out, as long as there is a power plug for the hairdryer and electric shaver. Mocha, as usual, was performing his dance of apprehension, where he keenly eyes the stranger with an obvious desire to play yet bark bloody murder.

Before plunging right into business, Aubrey made the effort to befriend Mocha so as to gain his trust, and that to me is a really important thing that I feel all groomers have to do. If I were a dog, I certainly wouldn't want an unfriendly stranger yanking at my fur and waving a sharp tool at my nails!
Do note that although we had opted for a full grooming, which include styling of the dog's fur, we almost always never make full use of it because Mocha's matted fur prior to the grooming means that we have to shave it off, leaving nothing much to style. Mocha's bath came afterwards, during which his anal glands were also expressed. For inexperienced owners, I suggest leaving this to the professionals. Your dog will certainly not appreciate you cluelessly poking around at his bottom!
Speaking of professionalism, it is also important to ensure that your groomer has the proper styling tools to accommodate to your specific requests. Never trust a pet groomer with only one or two types of combs!
As is obvious, 121 Pet Stylist groomers are very well-equipped to deal with the most challenging of fur conditions, which is why I feel safe putting Mocha in their hands.

THE DEAL
So earlier in the post I touched upon the financial burden of raising a pet, and how 121 comes into the picture, is through its very affordable costs: If I were to send Mocha for a full grooming outside, it would easily set me back $50-$60. Stella quotes me $70 for the same services, but within the comfort of my own home - which to me is worth more than $10!
